BBC Pacific Quay

The BBC commissioned an internationally renowned consultancy practice to design the air conditioning systems in their new building at Pacific Quay, Glasgow.

The media centre, as it was termed, had areas where noise levels could not exceed NR20 and also meet an extended noise curve between 32Hz and 8000Hz. These crucial areas had relatively high cooling loads up to 3.3kW emanating from the vast array of equipment and were to be served by an ultra quiet fan coil system.

The NR20 and NR25 areas were in the editing suites which are relatively small rooms packed full of equipment. The fan coils were located behind a false wall to form a mini plant room and space was at a premium.

The main noise source was the fan and TROX Design Bureau developed an ultra quiet unit by adapting a constant volume fan box which had already been used in an NR25 application.

TROX proposed a series of tests to verify the acoustic data together with the thermal and aerodynamic performance.

All tests were finalised confirming this new acoustically treated fan coil could meet these low noise levels whilst achieving the required 3.3kW of cooling. The air distribution within the room was provided by four swirl diffusers.

TROX Design Bureau reviewed all the other rooms with different loads and duct configurations and provided a guarantee that the performance in terms of acoustics, thermal and aerodynamic would be met.

The building has now been commissioned and the team were delighted with the overall result.
